The Midland Scrimmage will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon at Grande Communications Stadium
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech football program will return to Midland for a fifth-consecutive year Saturday afternoon when the Red Raiders host an open scrimmage at Grande Communications Stadium.
Â
The scrimmage in Midland draws thousands of Red Raider fans annually as the Permian Basin region is home to one of Texas Tech's largest alumni groups in the state. There is no admission charge for the 1 p.m. scrimmage and all fans are encouraged to arrive early for a vibrant tailgating scene.
Â
The Red Raiders are expected to take part in several situational drills during the scrimmage in addition to the traditional head-to-head format between the offense and the defense. The scrimmage is slated to last nearly two hours with a special teams period kicking off the action.
Â
The Permian Basin has been home to several of Tech's standouts in recent years as the likes of Baron Batch and Bradley Marquez – both past and present NFL signees – hail from the area. The Red Raiders boast two Permian Basin natives on their current roster in senior defensive lineman Talor Nunez (Midland) and sophomore defensive back Desmon Smith (Odessa).
Â
Tech heads to Midland with six practices already under its belt as the Red Raiders opened spring drills on March 4, the first of four workouts before the team embarked on Spring Break. Tech resumed spring practices with workouts this past Tuesday and Thursday.
Â
For the first time, the Midland Scrimmage will kick-start a best-of-three scrimmage format between the Red Raider offense and defense as the two units will also be on display April 1 at The Star in Frisco and then April 8 inside Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock.
Â
Representatives from the Texas Tech Ticket Office will be on hand Saturday to help fans purchase season tickets for the upcoming 2017 season. Season tickets are now on sale and can be purchased online or by calling 806-742-TECH.
Â
In addition to the annual football scrimmage, the Texas Tech baseball program will once again visit Security Bank Ballpark in Midland on April 18 when the Red Raiders host New Mexico State in a 7 p.m. first pitch. Tickets for that game can be purchased for $8 each on gameday.
