No. 3 Tech Digs The Long Ball In 4-1 Win Over Baylor
May 25, 2017 | Baseball
The Red Raiders will face the loser of West Virginia/Oklahoma State on Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Â
The Red Raiders (43-14) staved off elimination behind a three-run second inning and a run in the seventh to pick up its third win of the year over the Bears (34-21). It was also the third win over Baylor all-time in Big 12 tournament play.
Â
Senior outfielder Ryan Long drove in Tech's first run of the game in the second inning as part of a three-hit morning in OKC. He traded places with senior infielder Hunter Hargrove at second, who began the frame with a double down the left field line. It was the third time this year Long had put together a three-hit bid at the plate.
Â
Three of the four runs came via homers from junior infielder Orlando Garcia and sophomore Cody Farhat. Garcia's two-run blast in the second was his 12th dinger of the year, while Farhat's solo shot was his third in 2017. It was also Garcia's team-leading 15th multi-RBI performance of the year.
Â
Garcia's homer was the third-straight hit in the inning for the Red Raiders, scoring Long to go up 3-0. With the long ball, Garcia has at least one home run in every game against Baylor this season.
Â
After an RBI double from BU's Cunningham in the seventh, Tech got the run back with Farhat's dinger into the left field deck to push the advantage back to 4-1.
Â
Sophomore lefty Steven Gingery held the Bears to 6.0 scoreless frames, improving to 9-1 this season with the win. It was the third time this season he's held his opponent scoreless, racking up six strikeouts in the process. Junior left-hander Parker Mushinski finished off the final 1.2 innings of work, allowing just one hit and striking out two to earn his fifth save of the season.
Â
The Red Raider defense kept the Bears in check for most of the afternoon, as Baylor was held to 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position in Thursday's contest. Tech turned two double plays and stranded 10 Bears on the base path to close out its second game of the tournament and continue on through the bracket. Offensively, Tech racked up nine hits in the victory.
Â
The Red Raiders will return to action on Friday at 3:15 p.m. and will face the loser of West Virginia and Oklahoma State, which is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch on Thursday.
