University of Louisiana transfer the sixth addition to the roster for 2017-18
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech softball head coach Adrian Gregory announced the addition of transfer Heaven Burton Monday afternoon.
Â
Burton, an outfielder from Round Rock, Texas, redshirted in 2017 during her freshman year at the University of Louisiana and is eligible to compete right away for the Red Raiders. She was tabbed as one of the top 100 players of the 2016 recruiting class by FloSoftball.com coming out of Cedar Ridge High School.
Â
"We are incredibly excited about the addition of Heaven," Gregory said. "She is a multifaceted player that will bring a perfect mix of explosion and speed to our lineup. I could not be more pumped to have this kid in a Red Raider uniform for four years!"
Â
A slapper and base-stealing threat, Burton has been clocked running from home plate to first base in 2.5 seconds. She was a two-sport athlete in high school, competing in softball and volleyball. As a freshman in 2013, she hit .624 and collected 24 stolen bases at Fort Bend Bush High School. She was named District 17-5A Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore at Hutto High School in 2014 after posting a .532 average with 12 stolen bases.
Â
Burton, who played in center field throughout high school, was a first team all-district selection in 2013 and 2014 and a second team pick in 2015. She helped lead Cedar Ridge to a district championship and 21-5 record in her senior campaign on her way to District 13-6A Offensive MVP honors.
Â
An academic all-district selection in volleyball and softball, she is the daughter of Charles and Nicole Burton. Her father was a linebacker at Syracuse and in NFL Europe, and is currently the head football coach at Del Valle High School.
Â
Burton is the latest addition to a Red Raider softball program that also signed five high-school prospects this past fall in Erin Edmoundson, Kelcy Leach, Claire McKissick, Breanna Russell and Olga Zamarripa. The signing class was ranked No. 26 in the nation by FloSoftball.com.
