PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Senior pitcher Erin Crawford tossed a complete game three-hit shutout and redshirt freshman Montana Patin was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI to lead the Texas Tech softball team to a 3-0 victory over Maryland in the first game of the Palm Springs Classic on Thursday.
The win improves the Red Raiders overall record to 4-8 this season heading into Thursday's late match-up with No. 6 Stanford.
Patin gave the Red Raiders an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double. The inning began promising, as junior centerfielder Ashley Parker and freshman Elizabeth Eimen reached base to start the frame, but the next two Tech batters were retired by strikeout and the Terrapains were on the verge of escaping the inning unscathed. Patin, however, had other ideas as the Houston, Texas, native lifted a ball over Maryland leftfielder Meghan Booth that rolled all the way to the fence allowing both runners to come around to score.
In the bottom of the third inning, it was Patin again who threw a number on the scoreboard with a two-out hit. With runners on second and third, Patin singled sharply to left field allowing Ashley Parker to come in with her second run of the ball game and put the Red Raiders up 3-0.
Crawford improved her record this season 3-0 as she struck out five batters in the contest and walked none.
Texas Tech softball is back in action at the Palm Springs Classic on Friday with games against UNLV and top-ranked Arizona.
