LUBBOCK, Texas - While the field at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters struggled with high winds Saturday, (16) Texas Tech played a consistent round and moved up eight spots in the standings. The Red Raiders turned in the third-lowest round of the day and are tied in fifth place with (10) Arizona State and trail the leader by 15 strokes.
"I thought our guys played well and hung in there, despite the 30 mile per hour winds today," Tech Head Coach Greg Sands said. "They played consistent and didn't let it (wind) bother them. Now, we just need to go back out and turn in another solid round."
Tournament host (19) UNLV moved atop the leaderboard from a fourth-place start Saturday and lead the event by seven strokes over second-place (12) UCLA. (8) Texas A&M held onto third place and (18) Southern California climbed a spot to fourth. Arizona State made the biggest jump from 14th place to a tie for fifth with the Red Raiders. (29) TCU, (27) Tennessee and (3) Texas are seventh through ninth, respectively. (50) Arizona and (4) Florida are tied in 10th place as the Gators nosedived from first with the highest round of the day at 326. (12) Georgia, (45) New Mexico, (15) Georgia Tech and the nation's top-ranked team, Oklahoma State, are 12th through 15th.
UNLV turned in the only sub-300 round of the day with a 9-over 297, while Arizona State and Texas Tech followed with a 303 and 304.
Senior Chris Ward (McKinney, Texas) fired his second-straight 75 and is tied in 13th place, while junior (6) Nils Floren (Ljungskile, Sweden) improved two shots with a 76 and is tied in 28th place.
