LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore Barrett Barnes will have to wait until after his junior season to be eligible for the Major League Baseball Draft, but Thursday afternoon Baseball America named him the No. 48 Pro Prospect among collegiate sophomores.
Barnes, who was also named the No. 32 projected player in the nation by College Baseball Daily, was named the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year last season after batting .341 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI.
He became the most highly decorated freshman in Texas Tech history after earning Freshman All-American accolades from Baseball America (First Team), PING! (First Team), Louisville Slugger and Pro-Line Athletic/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Barnes led all Big 12 freshmen in batting while becoming the first Red Raider freshmen ever to lead the squad in batting average. He is the first Tech freshmen to lead the team in home runs since 1974.
Barnes batted .338 (23-for-68) against nationally-ranked opponents with seven home runs and 18 RBI in 18 games played. He led the team with 22 multi-hit games - which included six three-hit games - and ranked second on the team with 15 multiple RBI games.
