LUBBOCK, Texas - Kim Kaufman climbed the leaderboard at the Royale Cup Canadian Amateur Championship Wednesday, firing a 3-under 69 to wrap the second round tied for third overall.
After a 1-over card to open the tournament, Kaufman continued her strong stretch of play this summer as she enters the final two rounds as one of just six players currently under par. The Clark, S.D. native is six strokes back of leader Ariya Jutanugarn, who shot a 5-under card Tuesday to finish the day three strokes up on Jisoo Keel in second place.
She will be looking for her second top-10 performance at a top amateur tournament this summer after reaching the semifinals in June at the U.S. Public Links Championship held in New Jersey.
Kaufman will be joined over the final two day by teammate Gabby Dominguez, who, despite a 4-over second round, finished well ahead of the cut line. Dominguez is tied for 33rd overall at 9-over, which was six strokes below the cut.
Beverly Mendoza, meanwhile, did not fare as well at the Trans National Amateur Championship as she fell, 5-and-4, to Taylor Camany in the opening round of match play. The opening-round loss ends Mendoza's tournament run as she will take just over a week off before playing in the U.S. Amateur Championship, Aug. 6-12, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Tech's other player competing this week, Hannah Arnold, recovered from an opening-round loss in match play Monday to defeat Leslie Henry, 3-and-2, in the consolation bracket. She will face Jessa LaBarbera at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday morning in McKinney.
