Lyons Selected To Represent Big 12 At NCAA Convention
January 19, 2017 | Baseball
It is the third year senior outfielder Anthony Lyons has served in this role for the Big 12.
LUBBOCK, Texas – For the third-straight year, Texas Tech baseball senior outfielder Anthony Lyons will be one of three Big 12 student-athlete representatives at the ongoing NCAA Convention on Friday in Nashville, Tennessee.
Â
A native of Arlington, Texas, Lyons is one of 15 student-athletes from the Big 12, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and SEC who has a full vote at the meeting and has been included in the continued discussions at the conference level. They will serve as a voice for the tens of thousands of current student-athletes in the five conferences. Lyons has been an executive cabinet member for the Texas Tech Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) during his time in Lubbock.
Â
In the previous two autonomy sessions in 2015 and 2016, both of which Lyons attended, the representatives have enacted reforms in the areas of four-year scholarships, cost of attendance, concussion and student-athlete welfare, among others.
Â
Lyons will be joined by fellow Big 12 peers Ty Darlington (football) from Oklahoma and Madison Stein (softball) from Kansas. The voting panel will include 80 total members, with representatives from 65 universities along with the 15 student-athlete ambassadors.
Â
The current NCAA Division I governance structure, adopted in August 2014, provides autonomy to the High Visibility Conferences to adopt rules in a set of specific areas and ensures that student-athletes have the ability to vote in the decision-making process. Autonomous legislation is designed to allow permissive use of resources or to otherwise enhance the well-being of student-athletes by any member, to advance the educational or athletics-related needs of student-athletes.
Â
The autonomy proposals will be reviewed during a Discussion Forum on Friday beginning at 8 a.m., followed immediately by voting during the Autonomy Business Session. Proposals can be approved by one of the following methods: 60 percent of all votes (48 votes) and a simple majority support from schools in three of the five conferences, or; a majority of all votes (at least 41) and simple majority support from the schools in four of the five conferences.
