Bouwer Garners First Conference Honor

Werner Bouwer earns Big 12 Athlete of the Week following his UTSA Invitational showing.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Freshman Werner Bouwer was named Big 12 Athlete of the Week after his first-ever Red Raider performance.Â
"To have Werner come in and be able to compete immediately is great," Head Coach, Wes Kittley said. "He just has great things ahead of him and we're really proud to have him on the team."
The South African javelin thrower produced a winning 72.16m/236-9 mark at the UTSA Invitational last weekend.
This mark qualifies as the No. 3 Texas Tech outdoor record in the javelin throw. This is also the first top-10 school record throw since Rodrigo Zelaya 1993.
Bouwer currently holds a No. 1 conference ranking as well as a No. 3 NCAA Div. I West qualifying position.
Prior to joining the Red Raiders during the fall signing period, Bouwer was No. 1 in the world in the javelin throw. Bouwer also held a No. 8 U20 javelin ranking prior to his collegiate debut.
This weekend the Red Raiders will be in Abilene, Texas for their second outdoor meet of the season at the ACU Wes Kittley Invitational on March 24-25.
