Aberg in Fifth at Southern Highlands Collegiate
March 02, 2020 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Texas Tech freshman Ludvig Aberg will begin Tuesday's final round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate at 4-under and in a tie for 5th place as the Red Raiders are in third following the conclusion of the second round at Southern Highlands Golf Club.
Aberg shot the second-lowest round of all competitors on Monday, following his opening-round 71 with a 68. The freshman carded two birdies on holes 3 and 13, both of which are par fives. Aberg also notched a pair of birdies in the second round. He will enter the final round of play seven shots back of the tournament leader and just one shot behind a top-three finish. His two eagles are the most by any individual in the tournament.
The Red Raiders followed their opening 295 with a second-round tally of 288. They trail only Texas at 3-over and USC at 6-under.
Sandy Scott led the Red Raiders in birdies on Monday with five, including four on the back nine. Scott went 2-under and is currently tied for 15th.
Kyle Hogan and Andy Lopez had the third-leading marks for Tech on Monday with a pair of 75s. Hogan is tied for 22nd and Lopez concluded the day in a tie for 39th. Markus Braadlie and Garret Martin, who is competing as an individual, both shot 76 in the second round and are tied for 66th and 50th, respectively.
The Red Raiders lead the field in par five scoring at 6-under with an average of 4.85, thanks in large part to Aberg's eagles. Aberg is also tied for third in par four scoring at 1-under, while Scott is second on par fives at 4-under and leads the tournament in total birdies with 11 over two rounds.
For the second time, the individual Southern Highlands champion will receive an exemption into the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will take place Oct. 8-11, 2020, at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Golfweek will livestream final-round coverage of the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Tuesday starting at 1 p.m. as part of College Golf Live's 2020 Spring Series. Audiences can tune in at Golfweek.com/SouthernHighlands2020 to view the action on computer or mobile.
