Lady Raiders leave Oregon with two wins

EUGENE, Ore. – Coming home with a couple of victories in a Sunday doubleheader, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders recorded wins over the Oregon Ducks, 4-3, and the Portland Pilots, 4-0, at the Student Tennis Center.
Texas Tech (5-1) and Oregon (5-1) battled in doubles to begin the first match of the day. Oregon would win the first doubles match over at court three when Tilde Jagare and Juliet Santitiio defeated No. 33 Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila, 6-2.
At court two, the tandem of Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy were taking on Avery Jennings and Julia Visaya. The Lady Raider duo went up 3-0 before the Duck pair won three of the next four games to make it 4-3. Tech would break and then hold serve to claim the match, 6-3.
Right after this, the No. 15-ranked pair of Mariia Hlahola and Avelina Sayfetdinova defeated Patsy Daughters and Karin Young. Both teams held their first serves before Tech broke and held for a 3-1 lead. Oregon won the next two games to make it 3-all before the Lady Raiders won three of the next four games for the 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point and lead.
The Lady Raiders went out to a 3-0 advantage after grabbing wins at courts three and four. First at court four, Murphy won decisively over Candela Aparisi. The Canada native only gave up four games in the entire match to take it by a 6-1, 6-3 score. Over at court three, Lila and Daughters were competing as the Lady Raider won in straight sets in dominating fashion – dropping just three games to win the match, 6-2, 6-1.
Oregon won the next two points after getting matches at courts five and one. At court five, Jagare defeated Elena Daskalova, 6-2, 6-3, before Marjorie Souza beat Sayfetdinova, 7-6 (score), 6-3, to make the overall score of the match 3-2 in Tech's favor. Oregon tied the match at 3-all after Bridget Mihulka overtook Arina Oreshchenkova in two tough tiebreakers, 7-6 (10), 7-6 (5).
For the second match in a row, it all came down to Hlahola at court two, as she battled with Young. In the first set, Hlahola went down 1-3 before tying it at 3-3. The Duck was able to win the next few games in order to take the set, 6-4. Hlahola earned a decisive second set victory with a 6-2 score. Then in the final set, Hlahola took a 4-1 lead on a hold after being down 30-40 in the game. Young came back to win the next two games for a 4-3 score. However, Hlahola reclaimed the momentum as she broke and held serve to clinch the match with a 6-3 third set.
In the second match against Portland (0-3), the Lady Raiders dominated doubles from start to finish, getting wins at courts two and three to clinch the point. First at court three, the No. 33-ranked duo of Lila and Sherif defeated Lexie Flores and Meagan Pearson with a quick, 6-2 score. Then, Dmitrichenko and Murphy clinched the point after taking down the pair of Aleksandra Dimitrijevic and Isabella Marquart with a bagel, 6-0.
The Lady Raiders would go on to lead in all six first sets of singles, carrying that momentum to the end en route to a sweep of the Pilots. Murphy got her second singles win of the day at court five when she overpowered Maria Galatescu by a couple of 6-1 scores to make it 2-0.
At court six, Sherif made her dual singles debut this season and made the most of it. She would defeat Nadine Arbaizar Martinez in dominating fashion, 6-2, 6-2, to give the Lady Raiders a 3-0 advantage. Clinching the match was Dmitrichenko at court three over Dimitrijevic. Dmitrichenko put up a bagel, 6-0, in the first set before sealing the deal with a 6-4 set two score to sweep the Pilots, 4-0.
Up next, Texas Tech heads to Tucson, Ariz., for matches against Arizona, UC Santa Barbara and Princeton on February 14-15.
