PALO ALTO, Calf. - Texas Tech track athlete Gezachw Yossef ran a time of 3:41.97 in the 1,500-meter run at the Stanford Cardinal Invite on Sunday afternoon, breaking a 21-year old Texas Tech record and setting an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the process.
Yossef, who finished 8th in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this month, broke the school record of 3:42.90 set by Ricky McCormick in 1979. His time just missed an automatic qualifying berth by .47 seconds. He ended up with a second place finish in the race.
"It was a great race for him,' Tech distance coach Dave Smith said. "As it is it just missed an automatic qualifying time, but it's so close. We knew he was capable of this type of race."
In the women's 1,500-meter race Evette Turner finished in 11th place with a time of 4:27.81. That is the fastest 1,500 time this season by a Texas Tech athlete.
