Patrick Mahomes II has been nominated for the Wuerffel Trophy and Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech junior quarterback Patrick Mahomes II was honored twice Wednesday for his work off the football field as he was nominated for both the Wuerffel Trophy as well as the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
Â
Despite being best known for leading a dynamic Red Raider offense, Mahomes is also one of Texas Tech's top student-athletes in both the classroom and the community as he has made frequent visits to local hospitals while also volunteering with the Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge.
Â
In the classroom, Mahomes is an honors student in the Rawls College of Business where he majors in marketing. A member of the 2015 Academic All-Big 12 first team, Mahomes has been a regular on the Texas Tech President's and Dean's lists during his tenure.
Â
The Allstate Good Works Team, which is presented annually by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), is one of the most coveted off-the-field honors in college football. The award, now in its 25th year, recognizes a select group of college football student-athletes who have "made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others."
Â
The current list of 165 nominees will be trimmed in September to make up a 25-member Allstate AFCA Good Works Team that is determined by a voting panel consisting of Good Works Team members as well as national media members. From there, fans are encouraged to vote for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Captain by visiting ESPN.com.
Â
In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each student-athlete must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
Â
The Wuerffel Trophy, meanwhile, is known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service." Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel (Florida), the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS student-athlete that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Â
Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is conducted by a national selection committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.
Â
Mahomes and the Red Raiders kick off the 2016 season on Sept. 3 when Texas Tech hosts Stephen F. Austin inside Jones AT&T Stadium. Season tickets are still on sale and can be purchased by visiting the Texas Tech Ticket Office website or by calling 806-742-TECH.
