Carson Named NCAA Woman Of The Year Nominee

Hannah Carson is one of two from the Big 12 nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year.
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech track & field's Hannah Carson has been nominated as a candidate for 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year by the Big 12 Conference, the league announced today.

Carson joins Christina Hillman (Iowa State) as the two Big 12 representatives up for the award, which recognizes graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. A total of 142 female student-athletes have been named candidates by conferences and independent schools.

The selection committee will choose the top 10 honorees in each division. From those 30 candidates, the top three in each division will be determined. The Committee on Women's Athletics will then select the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year, with the winner announced at a ceremony on October 16 in Indianapolis.

Former Texas Tech track and field student-athlete Ifeatu Okafor earned the prestigious award in 2013. She was the first member of the Big 12 to receive the accolade.

Carson wrapped up a decorated Texas Tech athletic career this summer, leaving a lasting impact in Lubbock both on and off the field. A five-time All-American, Carson made in history in 2016, becoming the first woman to throw both the javelin and the discus 200' in the same NCAA career, let alone the same season. She is also only the second woman ever to accomplish the feat.

Carson leaves Lubbock owning all of the top 10 marks in the Texas Tech record books in the javelin, breaking the school record every year of her collegiate career. She also added the discus school record to her list of accomplishments this year. She is a two-time NCAA runner-up in the event, a two-time Big 12 champion and has 14 total top-10 finishes in Big 12 Championship meets. In 2016, she was named Mountain Region Field Athlete of the Year and went on to place second in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the javelin.

The Chandler, Arizona, native is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team winner and has been named to the Texas Tech Dean's list on four occasions. She was a Techspys Excellence Award honoree in 2015 and 2016, as well as a High Merit recipient in 2014.

Carson has also spent endless hours working in the community with activities to include: Drive Against Domestic Violence, Anti Bully Awareness Carnival, Pawathon 5k and Bean Elementary Career Day. She has also participated with Raider Reach at the Children's Hospital, Wreck Hunger Food Drive, Boys and Girls Club and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
