Lady Raiders Begin Foreign Tour With 98-57 Rout
August 18, 2016 | Women's Basketball
LISBON, Portugal — The Texas Tech Lady Raiders began their three-game Foreign Tour schedule on Thursday with a 98-57 thumping of CRC Quinta Dos Lombos, at the Pavilhao Desportivo Dos Lombos, in Lisbon.
The Lady Raider starting backcourt looked familiar, with All-Big 12 performers Japreece Dean and Ivonne CookTaylor getting the start, but the similarities to last season's team ended there. Recee' Caldwell and Jada Terry, coming off their transfer year, and freshman Brittany Brewer rounded out the starting five.
The Lady Raiders broke the game open early, ending the first quarter on an 18-4 run, punctuated by a Larryn Brooks three as time expired to make it 27-10 through one frame. She finished with 15 points. Tech held Dos Lombos scoreless for the last five minutes of the first quarter.
From there, Tech did not look back. 15 first-half points from Caldwell sparked the Lady Raiders to a 54-36 lead at the break. Tech outscored Dos Lombos 24-12 in the third stanza to put the game out of reach.
"I was really pleased with how we pushed the tempo and got out and ran in transition," Head Coach Candi Whitaker said. "We had a lot of opportunities with numbers the entire game. Jada Terry really set the tone with the way she ran the floor and our guards found her in transition."
Recee' Caldwell led the Lady Raiders with 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting, one of four Lady Raiders to finish in double figures, joined by Dean (16), Brooks (15) and freshman Arella Guirantes (18) who came off the bench to hit eight of her 10 shots.
"Our freshmen played well," Whitaker said. "Grayson [Bright] and Arella [Guirantes] played really hard. Grayson got her hands on a lot of balls, and Arella scored the ball really well. Brittany (Brewer) did some great things as well."
The Lady Raiders established dominance inside, winning the rebounding battle 38-26 and outscoring Dos Lombos 42-26 in the paint. Jada Terry had nine points and a rebound inside, while Brewer added seven points and five rebounds. Tech's leading rebounder was Dean, who snagged nine to go along with four assists and four steals.
Tech will be back in action on Saturday, in Madrid, Spain, taking on Madrid Select at 12:30 p.m. CT.
