No. 3 Tech Storms Past Wichita State, 10-5
March 25, 2017 | Baseball
The Red Raiders wait over two hours, but score 10 runs to take series opener
Â
The Red Raiders (20-4) sat through a two-hour and three minute weather delay before racking up 10 runs on 14 hits against the Shockers (11-11). It was only the second loss for Wichita State at home this season, who entered the night at 9-1 at Tyler Field.
Â
It's the best start to a season for a Texas Tech club since the 1997 squad began the year at 20-4.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Davis Martin posted his fourth win of the year, improving to 4-1 in 2017. The San Angelo native tossed 6.0 innings, giving up only one unearned run on three hits, while striking out five. After giving up a leadoff single, Martin proceeded to retire the next 11 Shockers. His final inning of work included a walk sandwiched in between three-straight strikeouts.
Â
It was the fourth time in six starts Martin allowed only one run, lowering his season earned-run average to 2.57.
Â
Four different Red Raiders racked up multi-hit performances, including three from senior infielder Hunter Hargrove and freshmen Michael Berglund & Grant Little. Berglund racked up a career-high four RBI, while Little came a home run shy of the cycle. Little is the second Red Raider to need just one hit to accomplish the rare feat, joining Hargrove, who has been one away on two separate occassions. Joining the trio with a two-hit game was junior outfielder Tanner Gardner, keeping the team-lead of nine multi-hit performances tied between Gardner & Little.
Â
The Red Raiders put the first run on the board in the opening frame, as Long worked his way to a leadoff walk. A wild pitch sent him down to second and a one-out knock from Gardner easily scored him for the 1-0 lead. Back-to-back singles from Hargrove & Berglund cleared the bases and pushed Tech's first inning advantage up to 3-0.
Â
It was the 13th time the Red Raiders have scored first in 24 games this season and the ninth time to score in the opening frame. Tech is 11-2 when scoring first and 8-1 when putting a run up in the opening inning.
Â
Three-straight singles from Jung, Gardner and Berglund spelled trouble for the Shockers in the third inning, immediately putting an end to starting pitcher Sanburn's night. With the bases loaded, Berglund drove in Jung with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 4-0 lead.
Â
Tech put the leadoff man on in each of the first three innings and had at least one baserunner in each of the first five innings of tonight's contest. In the fifth, a one-out walk to Gardner sparked a multi-run frame, as back-to-back singles from Hargrove and Berglund pushed Gardner across home and put runners on second & third. Hargrove showed off the wheels to score on a chopper to the shortstop, beating the throw for Tech's second run of the frame.
Â
Davis sent a grounder toward the second baseman in the next at-bat, who's toss to the shortstop traveled wide left, allowing Berglund to score and both runners to move up to second & third. Enter Little, who ripped a triple on the first pitch deep into right field, clearing the bases for two more runs and a nine-run lead. Little would give the Red Raiders their 10th run of the night after scooting home on a wild pitch. It was the sixth time this season Tech has scored 10 or more runs in a game.
Â
The Shockers got their first run of the night in the bottom of the fifth after a grounder to Garcia was to slow to turn a double play, allowing Vickers, who reached earlier in the frame on a bloop single just inside the right field line.
Â
Wichita State added four runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-5. A single up the middle from Troutwine drove in Ritter and put two on with one away. WSU's Katzfey pinch-hit and placed a triple into right field to clear the bases and would later be brought in on a grounder to second.

The Red Raiders return to action on Saturday, March 25, for game two of the series at 2 p.m.
