No. 4 Tech Drops Series Opener Against OSU, 12-10
April 22, 2017 | Baseball
The Red Raiders’ six-run sixth made the game new, but not enough to hold off the Cowboys on Friday
Â
The Red Raiders (32-9, 8-5) posted 10 runs on 11 hits, including a six-run sixth to tie the game at nine, but three runs in the final two innings for the Cowboys (22-15, 5-8) helped OSU take the first of the weekend set.
Freshman infielder Josh Jung finished the night with four hits, including a ninth-inning homer, along with three RBI and two runs scored. Junior outfielder Tanner Gardner also had a multi-hit day, putting down three hits to go with an RBI and a run.
Â
The Cowboys struck for three runs in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run to left field by Garrett McCain. The homer scored Ryan Cash and Garrett Benge, who reached on a walk and single, respectively. Â
Â
Erikson Lanning, the sophomore lefty, pitched the opening inning for the Red Raiders in his fourth start of the year.
Â
The Red Raiders bats warmed up in the third as Tech notched two runs in the frame. Cody Farhat drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning, while Ryan Long reached on a sacrifice bunt thanks to a throwing error by the Cowboys pitcher. Josh Jung continued the inning by smoking a double to right center to score Farhat & Long, who crossed the plate on a fielding error by the OSU right fielder to make it 3-2.
Â
Freshman righty John Henry Gonzalez recorded another solid performance in his relief effort. He tallied a strikeout and allowed only two hits in his 2.0 innings in hit outing that followed the first frame.Â
Â
Another freshman right-hander made a brief relief appearance for Tech, as Caleb Freeman took over for Gonzalez in the fourth inning. Freeman finished with one walk and one strikeout for his scoreless inning.
Â
The score would remain at 3-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Tech pulled even at three. A pair of singles by Long and Jung, followed by an intentional walk to senior first baseman Hunter Hargrove loaded the bases for the Red Raiders. Berglund delivered the equalizer on a sacrifice fly to left field to knot it up.
Â
Things got interesting during the sixth inning which featured 12 combined runs, six for each team, along with eight hits between the two squads.
Â
The Cowboys would wind up with a 9-3 advantage after the top of the frame as a result of a hit-by-pitch, an error, a sacrifice bunt, two walks, a McCain two-run double and a Colin Simpson three-run home run.
Â
The Red Raiders would earn all six runs back in the home half of the sixth with a cavalcade of offensive display. The comeback was ignited by a Tanner Gardner leadoff walk, who didn't stay on base long thanks to a two-run dinger off the videoboard in right center field by John McMillon. For McMillon, it was his fifth long ball of the season and brought the score to 9-5.
Â
A pitching change by the Cowboys with no outs and nobody on would require Farhat to restart the charge with a single up the middle. A Long walk and another RBI single by Jung set the table for Hargrove, who proceeded to add an RBI ground out deficit to cut the deficit down to 9-7.
Â
An Oklahoma State fielding error on a grounder to the shortstop would plate Jung from third to bring the Red Raiders within a run. After a single by Garcia to right field put runners on the corners, the Cowboys made another pitching change, but it didn't stop Tech from drawing even. Gardner striped a single through the middle to score Berglund to once again make the game new. The six-run sixth marked the 23rd time that the Red Raiders have scored four or more runs in a single frame this season; however, with the loss, Tech dropped to 16-2 when doing so.
Â
The turning point in Friday's game would come in the top of the eighth inning, when the Cowboys took a one-run lead behind an RBI single from Colin Simpson. The run was charged to freshman RHP Jake McDonald, who struck out two over 2.1 innings of work, dropping him to 0-1 this season.
Â
The Cowboys produced two more runs in the top of the ninth on a fielder's choice and two-out RBI single, making the score 12-9.
Â
Tech would pick up another run in the bottom of the ninth on a solo shot by Jung over the right field bullpen, his second of the year, to cap off the 10 runs scored.
Â
The Red Raiders and the Cowboys return to action on Saturday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Rip Griffin Park.
