LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior defensive lineman Talor Nunez was named Friday the 2017 recipient of the prestigious McAuley Distinguished Engineering Student Award presented by the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering.
Â
The award is one of the top honors presented annually for engineering students at Texas Tech. It is named in memory of James A. McAuley, a distinguished alumnus in the field of engineering and a member of the Dean's Council.
Â
"I'm very honored and humbled to accept this award," Nunez said. "I'm thankful for each person who has helped guide me to this position. I'm also thankful to the Dean's Council for selecting me as the winner of this year's award. It's truly a blessing and I will always work to represent Texas Tech well in all that I do."
Â
Nunez, a mechanical engineering major out of Midland, will be recognized at a May 19 banquet hosted by the engineering college. Nunez will graduate this August with his undergraduate degree and will immediately start on a master's program in the Rawls College of Business.
Â
In order to be considered for the award, Nunez needed at least a 3.5 grade-point average and also had to write a formal essay and present his resume to the Dean's Council. From there, he was one of 10 students to interview with the committee last Thursday.
Â
"Our staff is proud of how well Talor performs in the classroom," Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury said. "He is an example to his teammates of where hard work can take you. He is a great representative of our program and I know he has a bright future ahead of him."
Â
Nunez, who envisions a career in the oil and gas industry following his playing career, is one of Tech's top student-athletes in the classroom as he has been recognized twice in his career (2014, 2016) on the Academic All-Big 12 first team. He has also made numerous appearances on the Dean's and President's lists.
Â
On the gridiron, Nunez has been a staple on the Tech defensive line and special teams units. He has played in 26 games over the last three seasons, two of which that came during a 2015 campaign that was cut short due to injury.
Â
The May 19 award ceremony is just over a week from another important date for Nunez – his wedding. Nunez will marry Kaylee Rogers, also of Midland, in their hometown on May 27.
