March 30, 2018 | Baseball
The Red Raiders & Mountaineers will play for the series on Saturday afternoon
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 7 Texas Tech baseball team got back in the win column with a 4-1 victory over West Virginia on Friday night at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
Â
The Red Raiders (22-6, 2-3) scored four runs on three hits in the game two win against the Mountaineers (10-13, 1-4). Tech held West Virginia to just three hits for the second-straight contest, after dropping a 1-0 matchup in the first game of the set.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Caleb Kilian picked up his second start of the season and tossed 6.0 innings on Friday. The Flower Mound native took a no-hitter into his final frame of work, finishing the night with one run allowed on two hits, striking out four & walking two.
Â
Junior RHP Ryan Shetter shut the door on the Mountaineers, throwing 3.0 shutout innings, giving up just one hit while striking out four for his first save of the year.
Â
Tech's first three runs of the night came from the hometown kids. With one away in the third inning, freshman Braxton Fulford uncorked his first collegiate homer into the visiting bullpen for Tech's first run of the night. Then in the fourth, senior Michael Davis ripped a two-run liner into the left field pen, scoring sophomore Grant Little after his double to begin the frame for a 3-0 lead.
Â
It was Davis' team-leading sixth dinger of the season & the first time this year the Lubbock natives have both hit a home run in the same game.
Â
In the fifth, Tech brought in another run on a sacrifice fly from Little for the 4-0 lead. Freshman Gabe Holt began the frame with a single to center field, then a walk to Klein put him in scoring position. From there, a pair of fly outs moved him up two bases to add an insurance run for the Red Raiders.
Â
Holt would finish the game with the team's only multi-hit performance, his 15th of the year.
Â
Kilian carried a no-hitter into the sixth, but a two-out double just snuck inside the left field line to break up the bid after 5.2 innings. Shortly after, an RBI single from Inman plated Hill to make it a 4-1 game.
Â
However, Shetter's final three innings were nearly spotless, setting up the rubber match on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. on FSSW+.
