Four Women, Three Men Advance to Big 12 Event Finals

AMES, Iowa The Texas Tech men's and women's track and field teams completed action in the first of two days in competition Friday at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ames, Iowa.
At the meet, hosted by Iowa State in the Lied Recreational Facility, four Red Raider women and three men posted times in preliminary heats to advance to the finals. Junior Michael Njenga placed second in the final running of the 5,000 with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:07.7.
Advancing to the final round for the men were freshman Shameron Turner in the 200 meters and Desmond Johnson and Rohan McDonald in the 400. Turner clocked an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.36 in the 200 to move onto the all-time Big 12 record list. The finals in the 200 will be run at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Both McDonald and Johnson also recorded NCAA provisional times in the 400, running 46.79 and 47.04 respectively. The duo will be competing in the finals of the event at 2:10 p.m. Saturday. McDonald's preliminary time is a new Tech indoor record and a season best mark.
On the Red Raider women's side, four individuals in four separate events will see action in final rounds. Senior Ami Peters advanced to the finals in the 55 hurdles, dropping into the 8th position with a season best time of 7.98, and running at 1 p.m. Saturday. Amber Affeldt crossed the line with the second best time in the prelims of the 600 yard run to move on with a time of 1:23.27, a new Tech record and the top time on the team this season. The 600 yard finals will run at 1:40 p.m. Saturday.
Additionally, Evette Turner moves on in the mile and Dawn Charlier advances in the 1000 meters. Charlier's time also places her on top in the Tech record book for that event, with a clocking of 2:52.63. Sophomore Kristen Koppes claimed seventh place at the meet with a time of 10:28.60. Plus, Crystal Harlan tied her provisional leap in the high jump from earlier this season with a mark of 5 feet 10 inches, advancing to a final round tomorrow.
Competition continues Saturday with field events beginning at 11:30 a.m. and running event finals commencing at 1 p.m.
