LUBBOCK, Texas - Former Texas Tech media relations director Joe Hornaday has been named one of two recipients of the 1999 Lester Jordan Award. The award is presented annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in recognition of individual contributions to the GTE Academic All-America program and support of student-athlete ideals. Steve Rourke, associate director of media relations at UCLA, is the other recipient.
"It's a privilege to be involved in what I think is probably the most recognizable work that CoSIDA as an organization does," Hornaday said. "Receiving this award is truly an honor."
Hornaday was coordinator of the university and college division Academic All-America football team from 1982-87 and worked on various Academic All-District teams through the years.
Hornaday is in his third year as assistant athletic director for public relations at Tech after serving as sports information director for 16 years. The 1970 Texas Tech journalism graduate has worked in the athletic department since 1978, when he became assistant sports information director. He was elevated to sports information director in 1980.
