Men's Golf Struggles in First Round at Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - In the opening tournament of the 1998-99 season, the Texas Tech University men's golf team struggled to a 30-over-par 318 in the first round of the rain-delayed Kansas Invitational.
The Red Raiders are in last place in the 17-team field. Host Kansas fired a 6-under 282 and leads after one day on the par 72, 6,950-yard Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence. Baylor (286) is second and Arkansas State (287) third. Other Big 12 Conference teams include Iowa State (292) in a tie for fourth, Nebraska (296) ninth, and Kansas State and Missouri (299) tied for 10th.
Texas Tech's Philip Tate and Blake Smith each shot rounds of 7-over 79 and are tied for 79th. Alex Armstrong, Matt Loving and Sean Mulherin each shot 8-over 80 and are tied for 85th.
Morning and afternoon thunderstorms caused delays at the Alvamar Golf Course. All 18 holes of the first round were completed and 12 of the second round were finished before dark. The second round will be completed on Tuesday followed by the 18-hole final round. 17
