LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider Club begins its 1999 fund drive on Thur., May 6, with the theme "Building Tomorrow's Champions Today." The drive will run through Wed., June 30.
"We have always recognized as one of the primary goals of the Red Raider Club to remove any obstacles that would prevent any of our athletic teams and coaches from being successful," said Steve Locke, Associate Athletic Director for Development. "Any and all dollars which are donated to Texas Tech athletics through the Red Raider Club, whether they be used for construction or renovation of facilities or designated for the scholarship fund for student-athletes, are critical to our athletic programs."
This year's goal is $1,250,000. Last year, the drive raised $1,058,338 for the Texas Tech athletic department, surpassing the $1 million mark for the second-consecutive year, and only the second time in history. It was the 12th-straight record-setting effort, boasting almost 300 new members. The drive has increased every year since 1987. Funds raised primarily serve the costs of room, board, fees and tuition for Texas Tech's male and female student-athletes in the 17 sponsored sports.
"Obviously, one of the major goals is to increase the operating budget for the department, and the support of the Red Raider Club is a big help in freeing up dollars used to enhance our various sport programs," Locke added. "Texas Tech is fortunate to have terrific, loyal and faithful fans. We are counting on that loyalty and support when it is needed most."
More than 120 volunteers assist in the effort. For more information about joining the Red Raider Club or contributing to the fund drive, contact the club office at 806/762-2000. The Red Raider Club is open to any and all persons who have an interest in supporting Texas Tech athletics.
