LUBBOCK, Texas - Melinda Schmucker and Jaret Greaser received the W.W. Windy Nicklaus Memorial Scholarship today. The award, given by the Amarillo chapter of the Red Raider Club, recognizes the top female and male athletes in the Panhandle Region.
In her second season as a Lady Raider, Schmucker led Tech in assists with 148. She set a school and NCAA Tournament single game record when she dished out 17 assists against Grambling during the NCAA Midwest Sub-Regional. The Nazareth product started in all 31 of Techs contests, averaging 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per outing. Schmucker will be one of four returning starters for Tech next season.
During the 1997 football season, Greaser hit 16-of-17 extra point attempts and 5-of-9 field goal attempts before suffering a broken leg in the first half of the Nebraska contest. He was an academic All-Big 12 first-team selection and made the Big 12 Commissioners Honor Roll during the fall semester. Greaser, an Amarillo High graduate, is one of two kickers returning to the Tech squad this season.
