Lubbock, Texas -
The Texas Tech softball team split a doubleheader with #21 Texas A&M this afternoon at the Texas Tech intramural fields.
Texas Tech (31-27) entered the first game against Texas A&M (39-17) following an eight day break after cancellations and postponements due to heavy rain. In the top of the first inning, Texas A&M's Lisa Klam hit a two-run homerun over the leftfield fence to give the Aggies the early 2-0 lead. Then in the top of the sixth inning, Klam hit her third homerun of the game by sending a solo shot over the left-centerfield fence. The Aggies would get two more runs in the sixth to go ahead of Tech 5-0.
Senior designated player Aimee Weathers got her first homerun of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning when she sent a solo bomb over centerfield. Weathers' homer was the only run Tech could muster in the inning and the Red Raiders fell to the Aggies by a final score of 1-5.
In game-two, Texas A&M once again jumped out to the early lead after Lisa Klam singled to score lead-off batter Tammy Donnell in the top of the second inning. Texas A&M would get another run in the top of the third to go ahead 2-0. However, the Red Raiders would answer in their half of the third inning when Aimee Weathers singled to bring home Jenny Kohler.
The Red Raiders would muster two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings including a homerun by Kim Martinez to give Tech the winning run. The Raiders held off a late Aggie rally to win game-two by a final score of 3-2. Senior Emily Hayes got the win for Texas Tech to bring her record to 12-10 on the season.
Prior to today's games, four Texas Tech seniors were honored in pre-game ceremonies for their contributions to the Tech softball program.
The Red Raiders will return to action on Wed, May 5 when they host the Texas Longhorns in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the Texas Tech Intramural Fields.
