Lubbock,Texas -
The Texas Tech softball found the confines of home to be quiet appealing by defeating New Mexico State in a doubleheader 5-2, 5-4.
New Mexico State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in game one after Christine Stephens hit a two-run homerun to left field that brought in second basemen Niki Bernal. In the top of the second inning, Tech answered by cranking out two runs on five hits to tie the score at 2-2. Then with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kim Martinez responded with a three-run homerun that brought the final score to 5-2. Her fifth inning homerun brought her season total to six.
It was deja vu in the second game as the Roadrunners started off the game with two runs to give them the early lead. In Tech's bottom half of the first, Aimee Weathers hit a double to left field to bring in Eva Harshman and pull Tech within one. Moments later, senior slugger Kim Martinez singled to right field to bring in Aimee Weathers and the tying score. The Red Raiders would use a one-run second inning and a two-run third inning to pull away 5-2.
On the day, Eva Harshman led all batters with three hits on seven at-bats and moved her total hits on the season to 15.
On Friday, Tech will be in action at the National Invitational Tournament in San Jose, California. The team opens play against Iowa at 11:00 a.m. (CT), Wisconsin-Green Bay at 1:00 p.m. (CT) and San Jose State at 9:00 p.m. (CT).
