Detra Johnson and Kyna Cosby are no longer members of the Texas Tech Lady Raider basketball program, Texas Tech Head Coach Marsha Sharp announced today. In addition, Sharp announced that Kim Martinez will return to the Tech softball program for the 1998-99 season.
Johnson had been with the Tech program for two years. As a freshman, she played in four games and had 11 points. This season, she averaged 2.2 points in her nine games and grabbed a total of 13 rebounds.
Cosby joined the Tech squad last season after playing at Howard College. She appeared in three games before suffering an injury that would sideline her for the remainder of the season. Cosby scored seven points and had two rebounds in nine minutes of play.
"Detra and Kyna have decided to leave our program and I wish them well in all their future endeavors," Sharp said.
Martinez played in six games during the 1997-98 season. She had two rebounds in her nine minutes of action.
Freshman basketball player Kevin Clayton (Amarillo, Texas) has decided to transfer and has been given his release from Texas Tech University, head coach James Dickey said today.
"We wish Kevin the best," Dickey said. "I appreciate the way Kevin represented Texas Tech University and our basketball program. I am confident he will be successful wherever he chooses to continue his academic and basketball pursuits."
The 6-foot-5 guard was redshirted in 1997-98.
"I feel that it is in my best interest to pursue other options in continuing my basketball career," Clayton said.
