Texas Tech Adds to Academic Staff

LUBBOCK, Texas - David Flores has been named an academic counselor in the Texas Tech University athletic department, Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Steve Uryasz announced today.
A 1988 graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, Flores has served as the interim Program Coordinator and Program Advisor for the past year at his alma mater. While at UTEP, he was responsible for developing and maintaining academic programs for the school's student-athletes. At Texas Tech Flores will primarily assist with tracking and maintaining the academic progress of student athletes in the sport of football.
"David has a tremendous background in athletic academic services," said Uryasz. "He has worked with student-athletes at two Division I institutions and will be an asset to our program His experiences in working with student-athletes will strengthen our academic support program. David has worked with diverse populations as well as participated in college athletics at the highest levels, which give him a unique perspective on the issues facing student-athletes."
A four-year football letterwinner at Texas-El Paso from 1984-88, Flores entered the academic services profession as a volunteer student-athlete mentor at UTEP and New Mexico State, where he helped develop hands-on academic success programs and monitored student-athlete study hall. Prior to his stint at UTEP, Flores served as a unit coordinator in the boys residential treatment center at Mesilla Valley Hospital and was an attendance counselor for an at-risk program for the Gadsden Independent School District.
