LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech student-athletes achieved an average grade point average of 2.78 for the fall 1997 semester and over 45.4 percent of Red Raider athletes achieved over a 3.0, according to statistics released by athletic department officials today.
Of the 390 student-athletes that attended the fall semester, over 88 percent achieved a 2.0 cumulative g.p.a. or better, which included 67 members of the Dean's and President's lists. Highlighting the list of student-athletes with a 4.0 g.p.a. for the fall were football players Keith Cockrum and Tony Rogers, baseball player Jose Alvarez, softball player Paula Workman and golfer Philip Tate. Three volleyball players achieved a 4.0, while three others surpassed the 3.5 mark.
"I am very pleased with academic performance of our student-athletes for the fall 1997 semester," said Associate Athletic Director Steve Uryasz, who joined the Texas Tech athletic department in July following similar positions at Nebraska and Oklahoma State. "We certainly have a long way to go to meet our long term goals but this is a step in the right direction."
Earlier this year, the Big 12 announced it's Big 12 academic teams for the fall sports and Texas Tech was listed among the best in the conference. The Red Raider football team was second in the Big 12 in academic all-conference selections with 15. The Texas Tech soccer and volleyball teams each led the South Division in academic selections.
"I am really pleased with the progress we have made in the academic support area for our student-athletes," said Athletic Director Gerald Myers. "We made some significant changes in our student-services department last summer and it appears obvious that those improvements are making an impact. We hired Steve Uryasz to head that department and he added some talented staff members. We renovated and enlarged the computer labs for the student-athletes and increased our tutorial staff to nearly 50. I think last fall's academic successes by our student-athletes are a positive indication of progress and a sign of things to come."
