LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech athletic department is producing a series of public service announcements featuring Red Raider student-athletes that will be broadcast beginning August 1 on television stations throughout West Texas and Eastern New Mexico, athletic director Gerald Myers announced today.
Four :30 and :15 spots are currently in production by the Texas Tech athletic department and will be distributed to regional television stations and cable outlets in late July. The PSAs are directed primarily at the youth of the university's region and feature themes that are vital to achieving success in life.
Junior quarterback Rob Peters (Katy, Texas) is featured in a spot encouraging kids to learn to read. Junior catcher Josh Bard (Englewood, Colo.) speaks on staying off drugs, while senior women's basketball player Rene Hanebutt (Bowie, Texas) encourages kids to set and achieve goals. Sophomore free safety John Norman (Midland, Texas) encourages kids to stay in school.
"So often, the youth of West Texas and Eastern New Mexico look to athletes as role models," said Myers, a Borger native who became Texas Tech's first-ever Southwest Conference performer in any sports in the late 1950s. "We have a number of impressive student-athletes at Texas Tech and we feel they should have more of an influence with today's kids. So many people grew-up in this region looking up to athletes like Donny Anderson or E.J. Holub. We hope the kids of today will have those same fond memories of our current student-athletes. This public service announcement program is one of many things that our student-athletes participate in that give back to our community."
