Texas Tech Athletics Hosts Academic Awards Banquet

LUBBOCK, Texas--The Texas Tech Athletic Department will host the Student-Athlete Academic Awards banquet Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Knippling Center at Methodist Hospital. The event will honor the top student-athletes in each sport based on academic and athletic achievements. Awards will also be given to the male and female student-athletes of the year.
"We're excited to bring out the positive in Texas Tech and its student-athletes at a time when there hasn't been a lot positive happenings," said Associate Athletic Director for Student Services Steve Uryasz. "It's important to understand that student-athletes achieve in the classroom as well as on the playing field."
Sponsored by the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and Plains National Bank, 177 student-athletes will be honored for their accomplishments. Dr. Haragan, president of Texas Tech, will be presenting the awards and recognizing the top graduating senior in each sport. The event will be highlighted by the naming of the male and female student-athletes of the year.
To qualify for the banquet, the student-athletes must have achieved a cumulative grade point average equal to or greater than 3.00, the same GPA for the spring and fall 1997 semesters or just during the fall for first-year freshman and transfer students. In addition, returning student-athletes must have passed a minimum of 24 hours in 1997, or 12 hours for freshmen and transfers.
John Scovell, former Texas Tech football player, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet. Scovell currently serves as Chairman & CEO of Woodbine Development Corporation. Paul Jones, sportscaster on KCBD-TV in Lubbock, will emcee the event.
Initiated by the Athletics/Academic Services Department, more than 400 people are expected to be in attendance. Prentice Gautt, Associate Commissioner for Academic Services and Life Skills with the Big 12 Conference, will also be in Lubbock for the event.
