Texas Tech Honors Student-Athletes at Annual Banquet

LUBBOCK, Texas - Jeremy Hernandez of the football team and Jennifer Benet of the women's soccer team were named Texas Tech's scholar-athletes of the year at the annual Academic Awards Banquet held tonight at the Lubbock Civic Center, Associate Athletic Director Steve Uryaz announced today.
The scholar-athlete of the year award is presented to the top men's and women's graduating senior with the highest GPA. The award does not reflect athletic performance.
Other highlights included 15 individuals being recognized as highest merit scholars for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. Also, former Lady Raider great and the program's all-time leading scorer Carolyn Thompson served as the banquet's key note speaker.
For the evening, 177 student-athletes, managers and trainers were honored for maintaining a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA or for the past two semesters. Each student was presented a glass award with the Double T and Masked Rider on it from the dean or representative of their respective college.
This past academic year, all Texas Tech student-athletes, managers and trainers had an average cumulative GPA of 2.84 as a group.
