LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Athletic Department will honor 177 student-athletes, trainers and managers for their performance in the classroom at its second annual academic awards banquet on April 17 at the Lubbock Civic Center at 7 p.m.
In order to be recognized at the banquet, students must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average, or a 3.0 or higher for the previous two semesters. Also, freshman who achieved a 3.0 or higher in the fall 1998 semester will be honored. Each student will be presented a glass award with the Double T and Masked Rider on it from the dean or a representative of their respective college.
"We look forward to having the chance to honor these individuals for the excellent job they have done in the classroom," Associate Athletic Director of Academic Services Steve Uryasz said. "We started this banquet last year as a motivator for our student-athletes, trainers and mangers to do well in the classroom. You often hear about their performances on the playing field or court, but we feel that these are equally important. The accomplishment of this group is something that we can all be very proud of at Texas Tech.
Headlining the night's speakers will be former Lady Raider great Carolyn Thompson. Thompson played at Texas Tech from 1980-84 and currently stands as the all-time leading scorer (men or women) with 2,665 points. She is one of three former players from the program to have their number retired. Currently, she serves as the assistant principal of Allen High School in Allen, Texas.
Awards to be presented during the night will include the Men's and Women's Scholar Athlete of the Year award. The award is given to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative GPA and does not reflect athletic performance. Last year's winners were Tom Baldwin of the men's golf team and Danielle Brady of woman's softball.
This past academic year, Texas Tech athletes had an average cumulative GPA of 2.84 as a group. Of the 177 to be presented awards at the banquet, 85 have a GPA from 3.0 - 3.49, 49 earned Dean's List distinction by having a GPA from 3.5 - 3.99 and 15 were on the President's Honor Roll with a 4.0.
