Texas Tech Student-Athletes Honored

LUBBOCK, Texas - For the second consecutive year Texas Tech University led the Big 12 Conference with four Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars award recipients given by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine.
Senior biochemistry major Jeremy Hernandez was selected to the First Team Football squad. Junior family studies major Janelle Jones was named to the to the Volleyball Second Team. Kaneshia Polk, a senior majoring in Information Systems made the Third Team for women's Track & Field. Senior Brandon May was selected to the Second Team for men's Track & Field. May majors in Finance.
Following Tech's conference leading four selections is Kansas with three honorees. Nebraska was third with two winners. Baylor, Missouri and Oklahoma State each had one student-athlete honored.
Black Issues has been awarding Sports Scholars Awards since 1992. In 1994 the awards were named after the late tennis great Arthur Ashe Jr. Winners are selected from nominations solicited from all accredited colleges and universities. The criteria are: any student of color who plays intercollegiate sports above the club level; maintains a 3.2 or better cumulative grade point average; and is active in on his or her campus or community. One women and one man, who best exemplify the standards of scholarship, athleticism and humanitarianism set by Arthur Ashe Jr. are selected as Sports Scholars of the Year. The other honorees are placed on teams.
This years Sports Scholars of the Year are Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (men's Basketball) of Western Kentucky and Shannon Brown (women's Soccer) from Wisconsin.
