Texas Tech Women's Golf Seeks NCAA Berth

PALO ALTO, Calif. - The 23rd-ranked Texas Tech University women's golf team, seeking its second appearance in the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships, is in 16th place after one round of the West Regional.
Tech fired a 14-over-par 306 and trails front-running and top-ranked Arizona (290) by 16 shots. Second-ranked Arizona State (293) and No. 3 Tulsa are tied for second, while No. 14 Texas (297) and No. 13 Southern California are tied for fourth. Eleventh-ranked Oklahoma State (298) and No. 20 San Jose State are tied for sixth, while No. 10 Texas A&M (300) is tied for ninth. Missouri (310), ranked 29th, is 19th. Nine teams are within 10 shots of the lead, while only 21 shots separate first-place Arizona and 20th-place Northern Arizona.
A total of 14 players are under par after the first day, while seven others are at even-par 73 on the 6,093-yard Stanford Golf Course. The 54-hole event continues Friday and Saturday with the top 11 teams and top two individuals advancing to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships next week at the University of Wisconsin.
Arizona State freshman Grace Park, the country's top-ranked golfer, fired a 5-under 68 and has a two-stroke lead over Tulsa's Niina Laitinen. Oklahoma State's Maria Boden had the best score among Big 12 players with a 1-under 72 to tie for eighth.
Texas Tech sophomore Jamie Vannoy, a transfer from Arizona, fired a 1-over 74 to lead the Red Raiders. Junior Brooke Lowrance is tie for 35th after a 2-over 75. Beth Covington is tied for 59th with a 4-over 77, while senior Kristin Kight is tied for 83rd after a 7-over 80. Priscillia Hunt, who shot a 44 on the front nine Thursday, fired a 9-over 82 and is tied for 97th.
