NORMAN, Okla. - The 25th-ranked Texas Tech University women's golf team finished fourth in the 1998 Big 12 Conference Women's Golf Championships, 10 shots behind wire-to-wire champion Texas A&M. "I was really proud of my team," Texas Tech head coach Jeff Mitchell said. "We played extremely well today. We had some more bad weather, had a little cool front blow in, had a lot of wind and rain. You name it, we pretty much had it this week."
Texas Tech's third-round 302, the team's lowest score of the tournament and the second lowest of the final round, pushed the Red Raiders into fourth. Defending champion and 13th-ranked Texas fired a 303 on Sunday and a 923 total to secure second place one shot ahead of No. 12 Oklahoma State.
"I thought we competed real well," Mitchell said. "Third rounds have been a little bit of a problem for us basically all year. For us to come in and really play a good round of golf on a very difficult day, I was very happy with them." Oklahoma, which struggled to a 316 final round on Sunday, fell to fifth at 934. Nebraska, ranked 35th, finished sixth thanks to the lowest round of the day at 299 to finish at 936.
"We came in and had the second-best score of the day and made up some ground on the leaders," Mitchell said. "We ended up passing Oklahoma. I think on their home course, that is a real good performance for us."
A&M's 45th-ranked Isabelle Rosberg, who led after all three rounds on the par 72, 6,013-yard Jimmie Austin University of Oklahoma Golf Course, won the individual title by two shots with a 9-over-par 225. Rosberg, who was the 1997 Big 12 runner-up, carded a 5-over 77 today to beat teammate Jamie Hullett, Texas' Laura Blessey and Missouri's Stefanie Mitchell by two shots. (more)
Texas Tech junior Brooke Lowrance fired a 4-over 76 today to finish in a tie for seventh with Oklahoma's Isabelle Blais at 13-over 229. Tech freshman Priscillia Hunt jumped into a tie for 10th, thanks to a 2-over 74 and a 232 total. Lowrance was named to the All-Big 12's First Team. Hunt, selected to the All-Conference Second Team, was the only freshman to be honored on either of the all-star squads.
"I'm extremely proud of the way both of those players have played all year," Mitchell said. "I think Brooke has a legitimate opportunity to be an All-American this year. I think a good regional would certainly be the difference in that."
Texas Tech senior Kristin Kight, who shot 5-over 77 on Sunday, and sophomore Jamie Vannoy each tied for 17th with 234 totals. Vannoy tallied a 3-over 75, her lowest round of the 54-hole tournament. Junior Beth Covington tied for 35th with a 243 after an 8-over 80 on Sunday.
