ALBUQUERQUE N.M. - The Texas Tech fastpitch softball team dropped their final two games of the season opening Diamond Invitational to the University of New Mexico yesterday at Lobo Field in Albuquerque. The two losses drop Tech to 0-6 on the year while New Mexico improved to 4-2.
Tech managed only one hit in the first game, a single by Suzie Gomez in the sixth inning. New Mexico's Danielle Cassara was a double threat for the Lobos, going 2-for-2 and belting a two-run home run in the third inning. Cassara also pitched the complete game, going seven innings with no earned runs and eight strikeouts. Amanda Renfro (0-3) pitched her third complete game of the season, but took the loss.
In the second game, which was called after the sixth inning because of darkness, Red Raiders took an early 1-0 lead when Sandy Butler scored on a triple off the bat of Paula Workman. However, the lead would be short lived as New Mexico came back to tie the game in the second inning and take the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. The Lobos added three more in the fifth to make the final score 7-1. Ninette Martinez(0-2) took the loss for Tech.
The Red Raiders will travel to Hawaii on Tuesday for another tournament in Honolulu, hosted by the University of Hawaii.
