LUBBOCK, Texas - The 43rd-ranked Texas Tech women's golf team will compete in the Susie Maxwell-Berning Invitational Monday and Tuesday, beginning with 36 holes on Monday.
The University of Oklahoma is the host for the 54-hole event, which will take place at the Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman.
Texas Tech enters the event with two top finishes in its last two tournaments. The team set a school record with a 54-hole 895 at the Utah-Dixie Classic and finished second to Oklahoma State last week. In the Rainbow Wahine Invitational two weeks ago, the Red Raiders finished fifth behind four top 20 teams and finished ahead of No. 20 Oklahoma. Senior Jamie Vannoy (Sandy, Ore.) led the Red Raiders with a 17th-place finish in Hawaii and a tie for third in Utah. Vannoy's 218 at the Utah-Dixie Classic is a school record as well.
"The team has really responded to the challenge in the past two events," Texas Tech Director of Golf Jeff Mitchell said. "We have not played our best golf, yet. We have a chance to improve our seeding for the NCAA West Regionals with strong finish in this tournament. It is going to be very important that we beat Nebraska and Baylor. We have been successful in the tournament in the past.
"Jamie Vannoy continues her march toward an All-Conference nomination," Mitchell added. "She has played some very consistent golf all year and is a prime candidate."
The Red Raiders finished fourth at the Berning Classic last year and won the team title in 1996. Tech golfers have won the individual title in 1993 and 1996. Brooke Lowrance finished second last season.
The tournament field includes host Oklahoma, Kansas State, Nebraska, Baylor, Oral Roberts, Denver, Colorado State, Wichita State, Lamar, Kansas, UTEP and Colorado.
