LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech has been selected to participate in the 2000 NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., May 11-13, announced today by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee. The appearance will be Tech's fifth in the last six years.
The West Regional will be played at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., hosted by Arizona State University. New Mexico State leads the 11-team field as the No. 1 team out of the West Region. The Red Raiders are ranked 11th in the region.
"For a team that has not played its best golf yet, this is very exciting," Texas Tech Director of Golf Jeff Mitchell said. "We are a very good team and have beaten seven of the teams advancing to the NCAA West Regionals. With a good, solid effort, we have a chance of getting out and moving on to nationals."
Texas Tech is coming off of a sixth-place finish in the Big 12 Championships a week ago at Lubbock Country Club. Tech trailed Texas A&M in the regional standings heading into the Big 12 tourney, but finished two places above the Aggies and moved ahead in the rankings to claim a spot in the West Region. The Red Raiders finished 18th last season at the NCAA West Regional held in Houston.
The regional is a precursor for the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 24-27 at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore., hosted by Oregon State. Eleven teams and three individuals will advance to the championships.
