LUBBOCK, Texas - John Anderson has been named associate athletic director for academic and student services at Texas Tech, according to an announcement today by athletic director Gerald Myers.
Anderson takes over for Steve Uryasz, who recently accepted a post as senior associate athletic director and executive director of the Red Raider Club. In his new position, Anderson will be responsible for the administration of the academic and student services programs for approximately 400 Texas Tech student-athletes.
"I am very excited about this opportunity," Anderson said. "We have a strong staff in place, and we will continue to support our student-athletes in their academic growth with graduation as the primary goal.
"It has been, and will continue to be, a pleasure working with coaches that have always been focused on the academic welfare of their student-athletes," Anderson said.
Anderson joined the Texas Tech athletic staff in September 1996 and has moved through the ranks of academic counselor to assistant and associate director, and now to associate athletic director of academic and student services.
"To say we are happy to continue to have John Anderson in our athletic program would be an understatement," Myers said. "We have made tremendous strides in the area of academics in a very short time and certainly John is a big part of the reason for that.
"With Steve (Uryasz) moving over to the Red Raider Club, it is very important we move ahead with continuity in the area of academic services and student support," Myers said. "With John at the helm, I don't expect us to miss a beat."
Anderson earned his undergraduate degree in business administration from Western State College in Gunnison, Colo. A four-year basketball player, he was named an academic All-America in 1988 and was team captain as a senior. He earned his master's degree from Washington State in education and administration.
He came to Texas Tech after serving as academic advisor at Texas-El Paso. Previous stops also include the University of Portland, where he served in a dual role in academics and marketing and promotions. From 1990 to 1992, he served as a graduate intern at Washington State and Portland State, working in compliance and promotions.
