Women's Tennis Continues Play at Rolex Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team completed day two of competition at the Rolex Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas on the campus of Texas Christian University. The Saturday matches featured three Red Raiders holding serve in the round of 32.
In the first quarter bracket, sophomore Irina Tereschenko, seeded eighth, earned the rights to play in the round of 16 after a 6-3, 7-6 triumph over Baylor's Barbora Blahutiakova. Tereschenko's next match featured a battle with yet another Baylor Bear, No. 11 Frida Borjesson. With the rights to advance to the quarterfinals at stake, Borjesson proved too much as she ended Tereschenko's run with a 7-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Junior Barbara Schraml, seeded 29th, defeated UTEP's Elisa Bjorkland 6-0, 6-2 on Friday to earn a matchup with No. 9 Paty Aburto (TCU) in Saturday's round of 32. Aburto ousted Schraml in two sets, 6-0, 6-0, in a match played in the second quarter bracket.
In the third quarter bracket, senior co-captain Alenka Ovin, the No. 26 seed, faced No. 4 Joanne Masongsong of the University of Texas. Ovin, who claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock's Cecilia Poveda on Friday, saw her tournament run come to an end as Masongsong handed her a 6-2, 6-4 setback.
In the consolation bracket, junior Beverly Dawson reserved her spot in the round of 16, with a matchup versus Arkansas' Anna Dybicz. After a competitive first set, Dawson pulled away to win the match 7-5, 6-2. In her earlier match, Dawson earned a victory over Northwestern State's Ngoc Lou, winning the first set 6-2, before Lou suffered an injury and was unable to return.
In doubles action, the team of Irina Tereschenko and Beverly Dawson won their match in the round of 32 over Baylor's Paola Stephen and Daria Potapova, 8-6. Another Red Raider doubles team featuring Kendall Brooks and Alenka Ovin earned an 8-2 victory over the UT-Pan American team of Kathryn Waslen and Eve Nickelson in the round of 32. Ovin and Brooks lost their next match in the round of 16.
Play resumes Sunday, Oct. 21 in Fort Worth, Texas on the campus of TCU.
