FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis doubles team of junior Beverly Dawson and sophomore Irina Tereschenko just missed a shot at the doubles title in consolation play at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.
After earning a 8-6 victory in the first round of consolation play over Missouri's Urska Juricand and Katia Sevcikove on Thursday, Dawson and Tereschenko could earn the right to play in the finals with a victory in their semifinal match against Old Dominion's Nataly Cahana and Ana Radeljevic. Representing Tech's first-ever appearance in a national tournament, Dawson and Tereschenko came up just short, falling to Cahana and Radeljevic, 8-6.
The rest of the team completed day one of play in the ASU Thunderbirds Collegiate Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., hosted by Arizona State University. Senior co-captain Alenka Ovin advanced to the second round in the consolation bracket of singles play over San Diego's Catherine Heppell, winning the first set 5-3 before Heppell retired early from the match. In the main draw, Ovin faced Aleksandra Kujawska of Pepperdine University and was ousted in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
