LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech Red Raider softball team went 7-1 over the weekend at the Speedline Invitational in Tampa, Fla., taking second place in the 24-team tournament after dropping a 1-0 decision to fifth-ranked Stanford.
Tech won all five of its games in pool play from Thursday afternoon through Saturday, then began bracket play Saturday night with a 2-0 victory over Penn State, a contest in which Tech hurler Amanda Renfro tossed a perfect game with 10 strikeouts versus the Nittany Lions.
The Red Raiders then defeated Utah for the second time in the tournament in a semifinal game on Sunday morning, taking a 6-2 decision in eight innings. But the Cardinal ended Tech's run through the tourney with a 1-0 decision in the tourney final Sunday afternoon, scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth to take the victory.
Juniors Eva Harshman and Carmen Grindell were both named to the all-tournament team, and Renfro was named the Most Valuable Pitcher after striking out 75 in 48 innings of work, compiling a 6-1 record and allowing two runs, one earned, in her seven appearances.
The Red Raiders travel to Sacramento, Calif., this weekend to play in the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State University. Pool play begins Thursday with contests versus Iowa, San Jose State, Ole Miss and BYU.
