LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team heads to Columbia, Mo., this weekend for a pair of games against the Missouri Tigers Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Missouri holds a 7-6 advantage in the series since 1996, including ending the Red Raiders season in 2000 with a 1-0 victory in the Big 12 Tournament last May. Tech took a pair of contests during the regular season last year, winning 9-1 in five innings and 6-5 in Lubbock.
The same situation occurred in 1999 when the Tigers defeated Tech, 5-2, in the opening round of the conference tournament after dropping the two regular season contests. The Red Raiders took 4-3 and 6-2 wins in Lubbock in April.
The only other trip to Columbia for the Red Raiders came during the 1998 campaign, when Tech won 1-0 and 2-1 in a doubleheader, with senior Amanda Renfro picking up both victories with complete games. In the opening contest, Renfro allowed just four hits and struck out five, then came back to pitch nine innings in the second game, giving up eight hits with one strikeout.
Missouri won five straight games during the first two years of the series, winning twice in 1997 and all three games in 1996.
Renfro leads the nation in victories with 25 in this week's NCAA statistics, released Tuesday.
The Houston, Texas, native holds a 25-15 record with a 1.10 earned-run-average, collecting 251 strikeouts in 266.1 innings pitched this season. She has allowed 180 hits and walked just 59, while opponents have batted only .190 against her this year.
Oklahoma's Jennifer Stewart stands 23-3, while Baylor's Joni Miller has 22 wins and Missouri's Stephanie Falk stands at 19 after last Sunday's games.
Renfro also stands tied for 18th this week in strikeouts per seven innings at 9.2, the same as Drexel's Lori Swanson. Nebraska's Leigh Ann Walker is tied for third and Texas A&M's Jessica Slataper is tied for 16th in the category, the only other Big 12 pitchers in the rankings.
