OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Texas Tech softball team scored an unearned run in the second, and Tech pitcher Amanda Renfro tossed a one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament Friday night.
The Red Raiders (35-21) got on the board in the bottom of the second with no hits, thanks to a pair of Cowgirl errors. Andrea Joachims reached to start the inning on an error by OSU third baseman Jenny Kipp. Tech's Britney Stolle then laid down a sacrifice bunt, and reached when the throw from first baseman Stephanie Hodges was dropped by second baseman Lezli Leathers.
After a popout, Eva Harshman walked, loading the bases with one out. Tracy Cartier popped out for the second out, but Joachims scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Tech lead.
Both teams had chances throughout the contest, with runners reaching in every half inning but the top of the first.
Oklahoma State (27-22) got a pair of runners on in their half of the second, thanks to an error by Tech starter Amanda Renfro and a single from Jade Lindly. But Renfro got two groundouts to end the threat.
Shauna Briggs and Carmen Grindell both walked in the third for Tech, but Joachims grounded into a doubleplay to end the inning.
Tech also had two runners reach in the fifth after Sandy Butler singled to leadoff and Briggs walked one batter later. But Grindell bounced into a fielder's choice and Joachims grounded out to end the frame.
Renfro (32-17) got the win, allowing just Lindly's single to short left in the second. She walked three and struck out six, including three of the last four batters of the game.
OSU starter Lauren Bay (14-11) took the loss, giving up two hits, both to Butler, and an unearned run with five walks and three strikeouts.
The win makes Tech 3-1 in the tournament, the first time in school history the Red Raiders have won three times in the conference tourney, and also the first time Tech will play on the final day.
The Red Raiders face Oklahoma State again Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m. A win Saturday morning against OSU would put Tech into the tourney final against Oklahoma at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Southwest.
