TUCSON, Ariz. - Texas Tech freshman Andrea Joachims belted a three-run homer in the first and pitcher Amanda Renfro worked out of several jams to lead the Red Raiders to a 4-2 win over Hawaii in Region I of the NCAA Tournament at Hillenbrand Stadium Friday afternoon.
The Red Raiders were able to get on the board early, as Sandy Butler bounced a single over the third baseman's head to start the bottom of the first. Rebecca Eimen drew a walk after fouling off several pitches, and Shauna Briggs advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Andrea Joachims gave Tech a 3-0 lead when her high fly ball continued to carry, just clearing the wall in left-centerfield for her fifth home run of the season.
The Rainbow Wahine cut into the lead in the next half inning, as Stacey Porter lined a homer over the wall in leftfield to leadoff. Kate Judd singled off the wall in centerfield one out later, and Trisha Ramos followed with a walk. Kristin Anderson then singled off the glove of Tech pitcher Amanda Renfro and second baseman Britney Stolle, loading the bases for Hawaii.
But Renfro got a strikeout of Jennifer Tandarich and a groundout by Natalie Gonzales to end the threat with the Red Raiders holding a 3-1 advantage.
Tech got a pair of walks to Emily Bone and Tracy Cartier in their half of the second, but Butler grounded into a doubleplay to end the inning.
UH had consecutive singles from Sheri Oronoz and Porter with one out in the third, and April Crowell seemed to hit a line drive over the first base bag down the right field line. But the ball was called foul, and Crowell eventually flied out, as did Judd to end the threat.
Eimen was hit by a pitch to start the third for the Red Raiders, and Briggs moved her to second with another sacrifice bunt. But Grindell flied out to deep left-center, and Joachims struck out after fouling off a handful of pitches.
Again the Rainbow Wahine got baserunners in the fourth, with Ramos drawing a leadoff walk and Kristin Anderson reaching on a bunt single, a ball misplayed by Briggs behind the plate. Tandarich bunted both runners up a base, but Renfro enduced a popout from Natalie Gonzales and a groundout by Tyree Woodruff to end the threat.
Tech added to its lead in the fourth after Stolle drew a leadoff walk. Bone advanced Stolle with a sacrifice bunt, and Harshman followed with a double off the wall in centerfield, scoring Stolle for a 4-1 Red Raider lead. That double chased Hawaii starter Janelle Gonzales, who allowed four runs on three hits in 3.1 innings, walking four and striking out one.
Cartier greeted new UH hurler Desiree Duran with a single up the middle, putting runners on the corners. Cartier then stole second, but the Red Raiders could not add to the lead, as Butler grounded out sharply to second and Eimen popped out.
Hawaii cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth when Michelle Mumaw singled with one out and scored on a two-out single to left-center by Woodruff.
The Rainbow Wahine got a baserunner in the seventh on an error, but Tech's Maggie Ayres worked around the trouble to get her second save of the season. Renfro (34-18) got the win, going six innings and allowing two runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Janelle Gonzales (5-2) suffered the loss.
The Red Raiders advance to play top-ranked Arizona tonight at 7:30 p.m. local time, 9:30 Lubbock time.
