Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season in TCU Tournament

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's tennis team began its fall season at the TCU Tournament in Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 21-22.
Tech walk-on Dana Giles battled Felice Sanchez of Texas A&M Corpus Christi for three sets before falling to Sanchez, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, and placing second in her flight match. In the first round of competition Friday afternoon, Giles defeated Tyler Junior College's Britteny Holliday, 6-2, 7-5, and earned a trip to the final round by defeating Ashley Hawk of Abilene Christian University, 6-1, 6-2.
Kendall Brooks also faired well in singles competition, as she won the consolation bracket. She placed third after losing to TJC's Leslie Stewart in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. Brooks defeated ACU's Summer Beesley, 6-2, 6-1, in the first round of play to advance to the final round after defeating TAMU-CC's Jessica Martinez in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, first-team duo Beverly Dawson and Irina Tereschenko and second-team duo Kendall Brooks and Alenka Ovin both won in their respective consolation brackets.
Dawson and Tereschenko finished third by defeating University of Oklahoma's Bethany Griffin and Heather Saluri, 8-6. The Dawson/Tereschenko pair defeated Saint Louis' Vicki Zielinski and Julie Siemers, 9-5, in the first round of doubles play but later lost to tournament host Texas Christian University, 8-4, in the semifinals.
The Brooks/Ovin team defeated University of Texas at Arlington's Marketa Cizova and Nadine Dressler in the first round Friday afternoon and defeated Southern Methodist University's Stein and Kit Carson, 8-4, in the semifinals round. Brooks and Ovin placed third after losing to TCU's Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez, 8-6.
The women's tennis team takes a break this week but will resume play Oct. 5 when it travels to Waco, Texas, for the Baylor Tournament.
