LUBBOCK, TEXAS - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its preseason singles top 100, ranking Irina Tereschenko 60th in the nation and fifth in the Big 12. The sophomore was ranked 87th last season by ITA.
In the first tournament this fall, Tereschenko placed fourth in her bracket after falling to Baylor's Darla Potapova, 7-6, 6-4, in a consolation match at the TCU Tournament. In doubles action, Tech's first-seeded team of Tereschenko and Beverly Dawson defeated Oklahoma's Bethany Griffin and Heather Saluri, 8-6, to win the consolation match placing third.
Starting her second year playing for the Texas Tech women's tennis team, Tereschenko has already earned three awards, among them the Southwest Region Rookie of the Year, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and a first-team All-Big 12 selection. The Moscow, Russia, native started her freshmen year with the Texas Tech women's tennis team as the No. 3 seed, but due to injuries to the No. 1 and No. 2 seeded players early last season Tereschenko stepped up to be a key player on the team. She compiled an overall singles record of 12-5 finishing the season as Tech's No. 1 seeded player. Head coach Virginia Brown also teamed up Tereschenko and Dawson last season to form a dynamic doubles team, as the pair compiled an overall 14-4 record, 6-4 in conference play.
Tereschenko received 339 votes from the ITA National Ranking Committee, rounding out fifth in the Big 12 with 32 votes behind Alena Jecminkova of Kansas State University. Leading the Big 12 in ITA's preseason singles top 100 is University of Texas' Vladka Ulhirova ranking 19th with 656 votes. Katja Kovac of Baylor University received 608 votes, ranking 25th, while Texas teammate Joanne Masongsong ranked 31st with 560 votes, followed by KSU's Alena Jecminkova with 371 votes, ranking 56th.
