SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team ended play at the B&G Properties Tournament in San Marcos, Texas on a winning note, scoring nine runs on eight hits in a 9-1 defeat of the Oregon Ducks.
Tech (3-2) scored three runs in the first, two in the second and four in the third and got a strong pitching performance from freshman Kristina Blair en route to its third win of the season and first over the Ducks in four tries.
"She did exactly what she needed to do to get the win," was Red Raider skipper Bobby Reeves' comments on his hurler's day.
Tracy Cartier led off the game for the scarlet and black with a single, advanced to second on a ground out to third by Esmerelda Perez and advanced to second on the first of three hits by shortstop Kristi Robles.
After an errant throw to third by the Oregon (3-2) catcher scoring Cartier, the rout was on. First baseman Carmen Grindell walked and Andrea Joachimns flied out to center, scoring Robles. Eva Harshman's single moved Grindell to third and she scored on a past ball to cap off the scoring in the first.
Blair struggled in the first giving up the lone Oregon run after walking a batter and giving up two singles she calmed down striking out two of the last three batters.
In the top of the second, Robles doubled to left-centerfield scoring Rebecca Eimen and Cartier for the only two runs of the inning.
Robles doubled in two more runs in the top of the third, this time to right-center as Tech sent nine batters to the plate.
Blair had settled down by that point and retired 10 of the last 12 hitters she faced preserving the 9-1 win in five innings.
"It was a total team effort today," noted Reeves. "It could not have been scripted out any better."
With the win Tech improves to 3-2. The Red Raiders will be off until Friday when they take on #2 UCLA at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
