LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team got a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth from transfer Kristi Robles as it lost its 10th consecutive game Sunday afternoon, 10-2, to the Iowa State Cyclones at Rocky Johnson Field in Lubbock, Texas.
ISU (11-8, 2-0 Big 12) did its damage in the fifth and sixth innings as it batted a combined 17 hitters and scored eight runs on six hits. Rainey Eanes led off the fifth with a single followed by Julia Lindsey's single and a double by Erica Martinez to take a 3-0 lead.
With runners on second and third, Lindsey Herrin reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second when catcher Katie Ruby walked, loading the bases. Amberly Lessenger hit what looked to be an inning ending grounder to first that rolled through the legs of Carmen Grindell plating both Herrin and Ruby to make the score 7-0 after four and one-half innings.
The Cyclones would tack on three more runs in the sixth and final inning as Adi Blackmon recorded her second hit of the game and Lindsey tripled to right-center. A third consecutive hit in the inning by Martinez plated Lindsey. After a walk to Herrin and a putout third-to-first gave ISU two runners in scoring position, Brittney Stolle misplayed a grounder allowing Martinez to score and take a 10-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.
Tech (10-24, 0-4 Big 12) scored a pair in the home half of the sixth on Robles' second homer of the season but that was too little, too late.
Jen Bice (6-4) went 5.1 innings strinking out nine for the win while Martinez went the final two-thirds with one strikeout.
Red Raider Jana Baker went 1-for-1 to extend her career-best hitting streak to six games while Esmerelda Perez went 2-for-3 as she recorded her team-high 12th multi-hit game.
Texas Tech will next be in action on Fri., March 29 when it travels to Norman, Okla. for a two-game series with the Sooners.
